Protecting web form from spam

While we are still on the topic of spam, I ran across this idea today.

Protect Web Form is an initiative to stop web form spam. Anyone running a blog, wiki, forum or even a website for a while will soon discover web form spam.

Basically any web form is a target for spam, be it a feedback form or a blog comment.

The reason spam continues is because the stake is high. More spam leads to more traffic, leads to more sales.

Since Google ranks content in blog and wiki highly, there are huge incentive for spammers to target blogs and wiki.

Most blog and wiki software have some form of spam defence. WordPress’s Akismet plugin had been very effective in stopping spam to this blog.

However if you using an application with limited spam protection, give ProtectWebForm.com a try.

The idea behind ProtectWebForm.com is the use of captcha.

Captcha is basically an image like this A captcha.

You might have seen it often in sign up forms.
The idea is that spamming scripts have great difficulty identifying the image while a real human can type it in easily.

ProtectWebForm.com provides such a captcha that you can easily integrate with you form with little programming.

Give it a try if you are under attack from spam.

Thanks for pointing out this site, though I’m not sure I want to put a banner on the site in exchange for the service. Akismet is performing smashingly against my spam for now.

For users interested in stopping spam from reaching their email or even their domains, there’s an interesting concept (the first I’ve seen on its kind) on http://bluesecurity.com/

You might want to check it out and I wouldn’t mind hearing your thoughts on it.

    Thanks for the tips Vince.

I didn’t notice that they need a banner in return. Will take a look at Blue Security.

protectwebform.com does not require any banners in exchange.

Many have installed without it. They only ask to help promoting their service.
If you want to, you may place banner in return.
