Many have installed without it. They only ask to help promoting their service.
If you want to, you may place banner in return.

Thanks for pointing out this site, though I’m not sure I want to put a banner on the site in exchange for the service. Akismet is performing smashingly against my spam for now.

For users interested in stopping spam from reaching their email or even their domains, there’s an interesting concept (the first I’ve seen on its kind) on http://bluesecurity.com/

You might want to check it out and I wouldn’t mind hearing your thoughts on it.
