Using phpAdsNew to serve Ads

I had been experimenting with phpAdsNew for while to serve ads. Although there are still may functions I have not discover, the basic functions are powerful enough to provide numerous control over the ads I’m serving.

Here’s an introduction of how to use phpAdsNew to serve your Ads (such as Adsense) and some ideas of how I’m using it.

First let’s get phpAdsNew setup. I’m assuming you know some basic about script installation.

• Get phpAdsNew and install on your server
• If you are new to Ad serving terminologies, reading the documentation would help clear up concepts such as advertiser, campaign, publisher, zone, inventory.
• Advertizer is the owner of the ad.
  Since you are managing the ads yourself, the advertiser do not really login to use the system.
  You can create advertiser according to the ads source, for example Adsense.
• In a real world situation, Campaign is used to group ads in, well, an advertising campaign.
  Again since you are serving the ads, you can freely use campaign to group ads for a particular purpose. For example if you have multiple sites, you can have a campaign for each site.
• Next add Banner to the campaign.
  There are alot of functions here which you will want to explore here. Take some time to go through them. Reading the documentation would help clarify the different types of banner.
• You are now done with the Advertiser side of the setup.
• Now go ahead and add a Publisher.
  Basically is Publisher is a site. For example if I’m running the ads on 59ideas, 59ideas is a publisher.
• For each publisher, add some Zones.
  Zones are positions where ads appear. For example, banner on the header, banner on the sidebar, banner on the footer. There are 3 different zones.
• Now link a Banner to a Zone.
  What this does to to assign the banner to appear in the zone. For example a Leaderboard may be assigned to a zone in the header.

With phpAdsNew setup, you can now play with it and test a few interesting things.

Here ae some ideas of howI’m using phpAdsNew.

• Ads rotation is the first time that comes to mind. Simply assign a few banners to a zone and they will be rotated. You can even set weight so that some appear more than others
• Test effectiveness of Adsense setting such as color, border. Use this together with Adsense channels.
• Update ads for different sites in one place.
• Change/Add ads without editing blog template.

With some creativity, you can come out with more ideas of how to use phpAdsNew as an ads serving tool.
