Google buys YouTube

YouTube + Google

This must be the talk of the town. 1.65 billion in stock. Google purchase of YouTube is heating up the internet once again.

I watch YouTube because somehow Google Videos is not available in China. Would the acquisation cut off YouTube from China? I hope not.

Speculation, theory, analysis and naysayer abound.

The biggest take away for me is why buy YouTube when Google has its own video site? It is not the first time Google does this. I recall MeasureMap and Urchin (now Google Analytics). In the standard business textbook there are a few reasons for that:

  1. Take out your strongest competitor
  2. Create an even bigger market
  3. Synergy, better leverage of resources

Whatever the case, I’m just an observer, sometime wondering how all these money game is being played out.

GTDGMail after 2 weeks

This is how my GMail inbox look like since started using GTDGMail 2 weeks ago.

inbox after GTDMail

I didn’t take a screenshot of the inbox before but it was close to 100 times that figure.

Did GTD Work?

Well, the idea of GTD is simple and attractive. Although GTDGMail is a nice Firefox plugin to implement the concept of GTD in Gmail, I haven’t quite gotten the most out of it for 3 reasons.

  1. If you have thousands of thing in your head, jotted on post-it or stacked across the desk, can you imagine getting all that into GTDGMail?
I haven’t gotten around to tag things outside of my GMail inbox. There got to be a better way instead of sending myself a thousand emails.
  2. I get quite alot of email, the end result is that I spend alot of time following the two minutes rule to clear each email without skipping any.
  3. The tagging and reviewing work flow is still very clumbersome for me.

All of these are not really a problem with GTD or GTDGMail per se but more of getting the workflow right.

I believe GTD fit into what I’m doing online, especially with more than a handful of ideas going on. More update as I go along.

Google attempting a Sourceforge

Google Code

I was poking around as usual and found Google Code Project Hosting.

The first impression is that the service sounds very similar to the well known SourceForge service.

It appears that Google’s Project Hosting does not want to conflict with projects on Sourceforge. If you sign up for a project name that already exist in Sourceforge, Google Code will first send an email to the Sourceforge owner to confirm whether they allow the name to be used.

The service is simple and provides an issue tracking function and a svn (subversion) repository.

You will need a Google Account to sign up.

It will be interesting to see how things works out for this.

Release early, release often.

Quick sort using Google SpreadSheet

Today, I was doing a post on filtering low paying Adsense ads. There was a list of sites and I wanted to sort them.

One of my notebook RAM burnt-out in the hot summer a few weeks ago and it was left with 256 mb. A few applications was already open on my desktop already so I was very apprehensive of opening up OpenOffice Calc.

Then a quick flash and I thought of Google Spreadsheet. What a quick way to do sorting!

Google Checkout only accept US

The buzz behind Google Checkout is still ringing since it was announced.

I went to check it out and was duly disappointed. Why? Because the service only support US users. No luck for international users.

Replacing Paypal? Not anytime soon.
