K2 3 column scheme updated

The AdAdvantage K2 scheme has been updated.

This update took me quite a while to release as I wanted to get 2 ideas out.

  1. Sidebar module support. Yes, finally sidebar module is working with the columns. A number of user had asked and I hope this makes it really easy to play around with the sidebar.
I’m thinking of moving some of my blocks into the module in future.
  2. A block that spans across the 2 column on the sidebar at the top.
Here the 336×280 large rectangle unit sits nicely.

Beside the 2 major update, the CSS and the layout are also adjusted. The header is narrower and the background color of 3 columns are now using a y-repeated image.

If you use it, leave me your feedback.

Getting eAccelerator to work

While installing MediaWiki, I decided to try out eAccelerator. eAccelerator is one of 3 opcode cache mentioned in Mediawiki install. The other 2 are Turck MMCache and APC.

After browsing around, eAccelerator seems to be the most popular and with the most favourable reviews.

It wasn’t that difficult to get it installed although there was a few detours. A few quick searches (I still refuse to use the world “google” as verb for “search”) solved the problems.

Installing is easy following the installation notes. So far so good. Websites loads, so I went to bed.

Next morning I found all the sites down and there was a screen-full of httpd processes. The VPS ran out of memory and I can’t even su to root. I restarted and found that there were some problem with caching WordPress:

PHP Fatal error: main() [<a href='function.require'>function.require</a>]: Failed opening required

Still trying to find out how to get eAccelerator to work. I suspect maybe it doesn’t on a VPS with limited RAM, in which caseI can give up.

Update on AdAdvantage

I did not mention it but AdAdvantage, my K2 3 column scheme (the one that you are looking at right now), had been updated a while back and is sitting on the scheme page.

Thanks to all those kind soul that send me message to ask, yes I’m still updating it. I’m using it on a number of my blogs and my plan is to sync up with the K2 development as much as I can.

During the last sync I noticed that K2 is doing some integration with the sidebar widgets themselves and interfere with the Automattic’s Widgets. K2′s version is also not complete and cannot support 2 sidebars (as of my last sync).

I’m planning an integration as soon as I find some time and when K2′s version become stable. Thanks for all your feedback and comments.

Small update to AdAdvantage k2 Scheme

Over the weekend, my AdAdvantage k2 scheme was sync with the latest svn codes.

Grab the lastest copy from my theme page.

CSS was cleaned up and more ad-blocks positions added.

Please post any feedback and comments.

WordPress shortcuts I did not know.

Today I took a little time to explore around WordPress and found 2 little links so useful that I could not imagine how much time I had wasted without them!

Respective, go to the Add Link and Write Post page in the admin. Go right to the bottom of the page. You will see 2 links like the following.

link this press it

The instructions are very clear so I will just summerise,

  • click+drag the links to the bookmarks
  • go to a page that you want to link ot blog about
  • click on the booked link
  • presto!

Try it!

This experience just goes to show that we have to take some time to sharpen our saw and not keep sawing with a blunt saw.
