Chicago Sun-Times is running Google ads, on their paper.

Now, that’s an idea. Read this story.
I had a similar idea in the real world, let me share it in the next post.

A thought struck me that I should cover some ideas from China instead since most of the English-based ones are old news and analysed-to-death by the time I discover them.
Here’s one I stumbled upon today.
hexun.com (和讯) like many ideas in China are “me too” version of the English counterparts. This statement is not to discredit them in any way. Many do a good job serving unserved market, customizing to local requirements.
The services offered hexun.com makes it very much like a Yahoo. That is you will not find one but all the common web services rolled into one:
- portal (个人门户) (My Yahoo!)
- photo (图片) (flickr)
- bookmark (网摘) (del.icio.us)
- blog (博客) (blogger)
- group (朋友圈) (Yahoo Group)
If you are using Firefox, beware! Browser compatibility is not on the top of most Chinese developer list.
Multi-layer of authentication and security is also typical of Chinese websites. To sign up you have to provide password, password question and also personal identity card number (similar to social security number). Ever wonder why a portal site requires that?
Functionalities wise they are usable with many common ajax capabilities. Below is a screen capture of the user portal management.

New idea sightings.

Riya is still in Alpha and you need to email them in order to sign up. Hope they open up an account for me.
Would be really interesting to see the face recognition feature.

Meebo is a web-based multi-IM client. If you know Gaim, it is something like it but web (2.0) based. The interface is way cool.

Measure Map provides stats for blog. Yet another invite only site. Well, now that Google launched Google Analytics I’m not sure how competitive such service will be. Even Wordpress.com has pretty decent stats.

Frappr! is YAGMA - Yet another Google Map application. One thing about Google Map application is that they are very US centric. A lot of places outside of the US just do not have the kind of local details to make the map useful.
Actually Google China launched Bendi (本地) which has local information for China cities. I don’t think this set of information is available on the Google Map API. Anyone care to comment?
While not exactly the same thing as Plazes, I can’t help but comparing them since they are both map applications I saw within 2 days.
Interface wise Frappr’s is more straight forward. I quickly understood what the functions are. In the case of Plazes it told me a while to orientate.
Whether it is network location or friends’ location, the underlying driving force is still people. People like to know about other people. Map is secondary but provides very important visual. I must quickly admit it is addictive to zoom in and out, dragging the map around looking at the info bubble.
Frappr does a good job of connecting people through group page, forum, messaging.
Revenue seems to come from the ubiquitous AdSense although there are surprisingly few around.
And before you leave, tell me where you are from.
WordPress.com only list the Top 10 blogs on the homepage and the 7 fastest growing blogs in the Dashboard.
It would be nice to get to know our WordPress neighbours and what they are writing about. The Top Post and Latest Post are nice. But unless one watches the latest post closely, we probably miss alot of them.
Since there is no blog directory. Maybe this is a job for us the community. So here goes my idea.
Read the about for more information. Join me or send in your suggestions.
